Fuel Cost Calculator — Trip Gas Cost, Cost per Passenger & Monthly Spend

How much will fuel cost for your next road trip? This calculator tells you in seconds: enter the distance, your car's fuel economy in km/L, and the price per liter, and it returns the liters needed, the total cost, and the cost per person — ready to split the bill with everyone in the car. Everything runs in your browser, with no signup and nothing sent to a server.

How to Calculate Your Trip Fuel Cost

  1. Distance (km) — how far you'll drive (one way, or round trip).
  2. Fuel economy (km/L) — how many kilometers your car covers per liter. Check the manual, the trip computer, or official ratings.
  3. Fuel price — the price per liter you pay.
  4. Passengers — how many people share the cost; the tool shows the per-person amount automatically.

The math is straightforward: distance ÷ economy = liters, and liters × price = total cost. For example, 450 km ÷ 12.5 km/L = 36 liters × 5.79 = 208.44.

Monthly and Annual Projection

Want to know how much your car weighs on the budget? In the Monthly Projection panel, enter your km per month, fuel economy, and price. The tool estimates your monthly and annual fuel spend — useful for budgeting, deciding between driving and ride-hailing, or comparing two cars.

Example: 1,500 km/month ÷ 12 km/L × 5.79 = 723.75 per month, or about 8,685 per year in fuel alone.

Is It Worth Driving to a Cheaper Station?

Does that station a little cheaper across town actually pay off? It depends on the distance and how much you fill up. Open the "Worth the detour?" panel, enter both prices, the detour distance (round trip), and the liters to fill. The tool subtracts the fuel burned on the detour and shows the real savings.

Example: a 4 km detour to save 0.20/L on 40 liters saves 8.00 at the pump but costs ~1.86 in fuel to get there — a real saving of 6.14. Worth it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using city economy for a highway trip (or vice versa) — cars are usually more efficient on the highway. Use the km/L closest to your trip type.
  • Forgetting the return leg — for a round trip, double the distance.
  • Ignoring the detour — driving far to save a few cents per liter can cost more in fuel than you save. Use the "Worth the detour?" panel.
  • Comparing the wrong fuels — if you drive a flex car, first decide between ethanol and gasoline in the ethanol vs gasoline calculator, then run the trip with the winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a road trip?

Divide the distance (km) by your car's fuel economy (km/L) to get the liters needed, then multiply by the price per liter. Example: 500 km ÷ 12 km/L = 41.7 L × 5.79 = 241.50.

How do I calculate cost per kilometer?

Divide the price per liter by your fuel economy (km/L). At 5.79/L and 12 km/L, the cost is 0.48 per km. Multiply by the distance for the trip total.

Does the calculator work for diesel, ethanol, or LPG?

Yes. The math applies to any fuel sold per liter — just use the matching price and consumption. To choose between ethanol and gasoline, use the ethanol vs gasoline calculator.

Can it split the cost between passengers?

Yes. Set the number of passengers and the tool divides the total automatically, showing the cost per person — handy for carpools and shared road trips.

Is my data saved anywhere?

No. All calculations happen on your own device, inside the browser. Nothing is sent to any server.
