How to use the discount calculator

Five modes for five different pricing questions

1. Pick a mode

Standard, Reverse, What %?, Compare, or Stacked — each one solves a specific pricing problem, not just "price minus percent."

2. Enter the numbers

Type the price and discount and the final price, savings, and percentage update instantly — no calculate button to press.

3. Check the breakdown and copy

Every result shows the formula behind it, so you can copy the summary or export it as a receipt-style PDF.

What this discount calculator does

More than a basic percent-off calculation

Reverse mode

Already know the discounted price? Enter it with the discount rate and get the original price back.

Compare mode

Line up to 3 offers side by side — percentage or fixed amount off — ranked automatically by final price.

Stacked discount mode

Calculates the real combined discount when two offers apply one after the other, like a coupon on top of a sale.

Tax and card fee toggle

Layer sales tax and a card processing fee on top of the discounted price to see the true amount charged.

Save, export, and print

Save calculations for later, copy a plain-text summary, or export a printable PDF receipt of the result.

Examples

How each mode reads a real price tag

Scenario
Result
$250 item, 30% off
$175.00 — you save $75.00
Discounted price $60, discount rate 25%
Original price: $80.00 (Reverse mode)
30% off, then 20% off at checkout
Real combined discount: 44%, not 50%

When you'd reach for this tool

The scenarios people use it for most

Checking a sale price before you buy

See exactly what you'll pay at checkout without doing percentage math in your head.

Verifying Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals

Confirm the real percentage off — some retailers inflate the "was" price before applying the discount.

Comparing competing offers

$30 off vs. 25% off — which is actually cheaper? Use Compare mode to find the lower final price in seconds.

Validating stacked coupon codes

"30% off, plus an extra 20% at checkout" — calculate what you actually end up paying, not what it sounds like.

Common mistakes

Adding stacked discounts together

30% off plus 20% off is a 44% total discount, not 50% — the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original.

Comparing a percentage to a fixed amount without converting

"40% off $150" saves $60; "$50 off $150" saves $50 — they sound close but aren't the same deal. Convert both to a final price before deciding.

Trusting the "original" price without checking history

Retailers sometimes raise a price in the weeks before a sale so the discount looks bigger. Use What %? mode with a price you've tracked yourself.

Why use this discount calculator

Five modes cover nearly every pricing question you'll actually run into — not just the basic calculation, but reverse lookups, side-by-side comparisons, and stacked coupons.

Stacked mode fixes the most common mistake in combined promotions: sequential discounts never add up the way they look like they should.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the original price by (1 minus the discount rate as a decimal). For 25% off $80: $80 × 0.75 = $60. Switch to Standard mode to see the same math with the tax and fee toggles included.
